OPINION: 5 Must-Learn Beginner Guitar Solos For Aspiring Lead Guitarists‏

by Kelvin Ho

To be the lead guitarist, you need to be pretty competent with your stringed instrument. If you have not quite mastered your guitar basics, then this is something you should not take up ... at least not for the immediate future. Playing the lead guitar requires you to possess the knowledge of basic guitar chords and the know how of rhythm and how to strum based on the music genre. Depending on your aptitude and how much you practice, it can typically take about a few months to years to master it.

Without the above, you will probably lack the confidence of doing guitar solos. Guitar solos needs the guitarist to express his music freely during the passage of the song. Attention is on the lead guitarist during this time and whether the guitarist gets the fame and glory he dreams of depends on this moment.

If this is what you want, here are five great guitar solos that you may want to consider picking up for your lead guitar preparation.

November Rain

This single by Guns N Roses was written by lead singer Axl Rose and released in June 1992. In fact, it is one of Guns N' Roses' longest songs. The full version stands at 9 minutes and at around 7 minutes, the song fades and builds into a 2 minute guitar solo by Slash. This song has so much possibility that it is always a good song for the beginner guitarist to work on. It is also a very fun song to improvise and is currently listed at number 6 on Guitar World's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.

Not the newest song but this 1974 classic released by the American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd could be just the right song for you to practice on. It is simple and pretty easy to pick up. Free Bird is currently number 3 on the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos list by Guitar World. It is often used as a finale by Lynyrd during their live performances, and can go well over 14 minutes when played live.

Pachelbel Canon in D (Rock)

If you have been on Youtube for some time, you may have come across this video of a musician aficionado who had managed to bring this song to a whole new level. While this is one of the more challenging songs, it is one that is sure to impress others.

Stairway to Heaven

A relatively simple song to learn, this song is popular with beginner guitar soloists. With its slow tempo, it will allow you to convey your feelings easily when you play.

Hotel California

This is a runaway classic that needs little introduction. Play it well and you will find yourself playing at more venues.
